To mark the 600th anniversary of St Andrews, WSD signed a 10-year agreement to engage in research, provide courses and organise international conferences on terrorism and political violence through the creation of The Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Pollical Violence (CSTPV). CSTPV is dedicated to the study of the causes, dynamics, characteristic and consequences of terrorism and related forms of political violence. In doing so, it is committed to providing independent policy relevant, evidence-based scholarly analysis.
Following the pandemic, CSTPV has been busy with the phased return to in-person events and teaching. As well as introducing a new module on Counter-extremism: Ethics, Policy and Practice, they have also hosted the first in-person Paul Wilkinson Memorial Lecture since 2019. The Advanced Certificate in Terrorism Studies has been kept up to date with new modules on Northern Ireland: The Troubles and Women in Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism.
Other innovations in teaching include the recently run Interactive Counter-Terrorism Simulation hosted on campus for residential and distance learning students where they tried to run a fictional country through an ongoing terrorist campaign. The Centre has also been working to catalogue a huge number of photos, news clippings, reports and correspondence that were left to the university to form the Global History of Terrorism Archive which will be unveiled in late in 2022.
